Gone Country: Why I Picked Julio as the Winner

What an incredible predicament I found myself in on the finale of Gone Country. I gotta tell you, I was actually secretly hoping that the episode where I heard the original songs for the first time that I would be able to start crossing people off the list. I liked everybody's personality and everybody was bringing something great to the table, but I was hoping that a few of them would write songs that weren't very good, and I could just cross them off the list based on the lack of greatness of the song. But then everybody wrote a viable song, in my opinion. Literally everybody. And if you know me, you know I'm a real hardcore guy when it comes to integrity of songwriting. I mean, I've made my career on songwriting, but I wasn't able to cross anybody off the list at that point, which was a little concerning to me because then I knew it was all going to boil down to the performances.
So on the finale, as I'm watching everybody perform, once again it was not extremely clear who was in the lead up until I saw Julio [Iglesias Jr.] perform. You can actually see my reaction on TV where my eyes kinda got wide and I went, "Wow." There was a palpable magnetism between Julio and that audience, and not just the women -- men and women. The whole entire place moved about three feet closer to the stage when he hit that chorus. It was the X-factor that I talked about in the final episode. I kinda laid out the criteria of what it was going to take for somebody to get that final little edge and the final little edge to me was the X-factor -- the X-factor being that thing that you can't put your finger on, but you witnessed it, you felt it, and it was real. And gotta tell you, Julio had that.
Diana DeGarmo's vocals were so incredible. Had it just been based on vocal performance, Diana would have won it hands down. She had a strong response from the audience, but it was not, in my opinion, as strong as the one Julio had. So that was one real major factor in me picking Julio. And, to be quite honest with you, the other real major factor was, I think, that Julio Iglesias Jr. brings an element to country music that does not exist -- and that being the Spanish-English element. I remember growing up in Texas and hearing Johnny Rodriguez on my radio station, and about half my friends were Spanish kids -- Mexican kids -- and their first language was Spanish. They were all my buddies. I remember Johnny Rodriguez turning them on to country music. They liked it, but it wasn't something they completely related to until they saw Johnny Rodriguez.
Well, I think, it's been 30 years since that, and I think it's time we pay attention to that audience again. I see Spanish-speaking people coming to Big & Rich shows by the hundreds and thousands, depending on the part of the country that we're in, and right now, there's nobody in our format speaking to that audience. So that was another major factor for me that I didn't think anybody else on the cast brought to the table, obviously. He is a true international artist. Anybody that knows me knows I love country music so much, I want to see it become the most popular format of music in the world. I want it to be the biggest thing in the world, and one thing we have to do to do that is to embrace artists that can help us take it around the world and that can educate the world about how great our music is. Julio is such a class act and always carries himself with integrity. Those are the factors that weighed in to me to pick him as the winner of Gone Country.

Great blog John.
Nora says:
JR–So you wanted to reach the Spanish speaking market, that’s fine. But this was supposed to be a contest!! Your personal goals shouldn’t be involved. Most of us who watched the show feel cheated. We thought the rules were to see who could “go county” not see who can open a new market for you. You didn’t practice what you preached (especially after your tyraid on Diana)!! You’ve come off looking like a hyprocrite. A lot of us are very disappointed in you and your agenda!
Michele1 says:
I loved the show John and trust your decision.
katiaq says:
Awesome Blog. Cant wait for Season 2. Diana was my favorite. I hope someone signs her.
Linda says:
Good blog, but I still disagree… should of been someone else! He wasn’t country at all!
slinger1111 says:
And that’s what’s wrong with country music now days. It’s not about the music anymore. It’s the performance. It’s a good thing I started playing back in the early 70’s instead of now. The music wouldn’t have interested me and having a man singing to me on his knee doesn’t interest me at all (yes JR, men do go to concerts and buy CD’s too).
Renea from Tennessee says:
i see where you came from, but still believe that Bobby Brown should have won hands down!
erin says:
Loved the show from beginning to end.
Renea from Tennessee says:
here’s hoping someone gives Bobby a contract!
sheepykim says:
great blog, John. I think that Diana had the best vocals, Maureen had the best song, and Julio had the best performance. It must have been tough picking the winner for the show. I didn’t even know who I was voting for. I trust your decision, and your reasons for chosing him were. great. I can’t wait to see the next season!
Matt says:
Ugh… no wonder people can’t stand Nashville. Yall are so out of touch it’s not even funny. I’ll stick with REAL country music from Texas and the south. There is NOTHING “country” about Julio’s song - it’s pop and latino all the way. JR - YOU CHEATED US OUT OF A CHANCE TO EXPOSE A REAL COUNTRY STAR!!!
Steve says:
I think most would agree that Julio was amoung the weakest from a country perspective. The response from the women in the audience was about his looks, seductive latin voice, and moves. I couln’t believe it until I read Nora’s comment about reaching the latin market which actually makes sense. You didn’t follow your own convictions and let the rest of the contestants, the fans of “Gone Country”, AND country music fans down. You impressed me and kept my interest (which says a lot because it’s the first show i’ve EVER watched on CMT) right to the end. Then you compromised your integrity big time. Sorry, but Gone Country needs another host. One that HAS the authenticy you asked the contestants to deliver.
Just Gone says:
John’s reasoning for choosing Julio as the winner of Gone Country…the X-Factor…would have made more sense of the show was not sold to the fans as Gone Country. The premise of the show was to take performers from other genres or celebrity and see which contestant could write and perform the best country song. Every episode featured John explaining his love of Country Music, the fans of Country Music, Country life….there was no mention of the so called X-Factor or pleasing the crowd.
Suddenly in the final episode. everything ‘Country’ was tossed out, and I felt like I was watching Nashville’s version of the Surreal Life tries out for American Idol…. and then the least Countryfied song was chosen as the winner!!! It felt manufactured and staged. Any of the other songs not chosen were more country than Julio’s. His voice was weak and so where the lyrics. So why be surprised people are in uproar? They feel misled, since the outcome doesn’t reflect what the concept of the show was meant to be…Gone Country, Not Gone Commercial.
Big Al says:
There is nothing Country about Julio.
If there must be a season 2 let George Jones be the judge and host. At least he knows country.
And it is good to see that your family and employees post here to support you. Because you don’t know country.
all right 1992 kiss up.
countrygirl says:
Awesome show!! I totally loved it until the final minutes. I was so disappointed in the winner. There wasn’t one country thing about Julio. I actually thought he was the only one out of the group that shouldn’t have one. I could have seen anybody else winning except him. Julio was even shocked himself. Oh well, maybe someone else will sign some of them.
Looking forward to another season!
Deborah says:
I liked Carnie Wilson’s song and performance a lot better than Julios.
Lynn says:
“There was a palpable magnetism between Julio and that audience, and not just the women — men and women. The whole entire place moved about three feet closer to the stage when he hit that chorus. It was the X-factor that I talked about in the final episode. I kinda laid out the criteria of what it was going to take for somebody to get that final little edge and the final little edge to me was the X-factor — the X-factor being that thing that you can’t put your finger on, but you witnessed it, you felt it, and it was real. And gotta tell you, Julio had that.”
That sounds like your trying to sell the “sex appeal”
X factor. I don’t think we are going to buy it. I have watched the episode and do not see that the “men” were moving forward to get more of Julio. More like the young women were pushing the men forward..after they had been swooned by Julio..thats not Country to me…and many others.
My family actually was saying at the time of his performance ‘oh my gosh”, “that’s not country”, “he will loose”,” he will never win”. Maybe that was your plan all along to “stir” the pot. This portion of the pot will not be stirring for season 2.
“Julio is such a class act and always carries himself with integrity.” and look what kind of position you have placed him in.
“And, to be quite honest with you, the other real major factor was, I think, that Julio Iglesias Jr. brings an element to country music that does not exist — and that being the Spanish-English element.”
That tells me that you had this planned all along. So why put on a show you could of just signed in to a contract. Sounds like you had him picked from day one.
Why are you just singling out Diana out in your blog? Is it because your now taking the heat over this decision? (By the blogs you are taking a lot of heat)
I think you owe her and her fans an apoligee for raking her over the coals on TV, when Julio’s and others were no more Country than hers.
I feel like I have been cheated by watching the show all these weeks. I guess I thought the “Best Country” artist would of won.
Lori says:
I agree there was NOTHING country about Julio. Not the rightful winner by a long shot! John’s decision was based on the $$ he thinks he will get from selling Julio’s music. Julio had no respect for country music as seen in the one episode where he remarked he would feel like an idiot singing a song with lyrics like the song writer had him sing. Very disappointed in the decision of the winner. I agree with Matt’s comment. All pop and latino all the way. You cheated us and the contestants of a new country star.
Displaced Southern Gal says:
Well! Here’s my post from yesterday. I thought as much!

Hey, ya’ll - I, too, am totally perplexed by JR’s choice; while I had no specific opinon as to who should win, I certainly did not count Julio in as a serious contender. However - remember the dinner table conversation in the first episode? JR specifically said when addressing Julio that they were looking for an artist to reach the Spanish speaking audience. And at the performance, as women screamed, did anybody notice JR’s eyes? - click!
Of course, they do know more than I do about the business and all. Hey, wouldn’t it be interesting if, when the cast CD is released, someone else’s song breaks out?
Continuing today 3/10/08:
Ya know, John if you wanted to find a Latino artist, you didn’t have to use someone else’s money to pursue your personal goal, which is laudable and needed, by the way, but I believe many, many fans interpreted the show’s premise as stated in the first episode correctly - you just didn’t do what you said you were going to, hon….sorry…you’re still talented as hell, and I hope this works for you, God bless you and yours…
Dee says:
I hope someone in Nashville will see the talent of Bobby Brown. His song was beautiful and he certainly put his heart into it. I always thought that was the root of country music. If Bobbie’s song is recorded it will be a HUGH hit. After reading these blogs, I see that I am not the only one who thought Bobby Brown was the winner hands
down.
Displaced Southern Gal says:
Oh, yeah! Keep your look! The fur coat (whether it’s real or fake!), cowboy hat, an dsunglasses! Hot, baby, hot! I still like to watch your entrance in the first episode, and by the way, go Muzik Mafia!
P.S. Tell Julio “Don’t try to dance!”
Displaced Southern Gal says:
Bobby has too many issues. I loved him so much, and his song is awesome, but…..
Kim says:
John Rich,
You have lost 2 more fans of the Gone Country series. We felt so let down when you gave the title to Juilo. We thought the other performers were better than Juilo. We watched the show every week, and thought it was great until the final moments of the show. There was nothing country about Juilos’ performance. We thought that Mo, Bobby Brown and Carney Wilsons songs were much better than Juilos!!!! We feel let down, and hope you can redeem yourself!!!
We agree with Big Al, let George Jones be judge and host, maybe we will actually get a good “country” singer!!!!
Patty says:
I was so disappointed with Julio getting picked to be the winner. To me he wasn’t even a runner-up. I just don’t see anything in him at all. He didn’t even seem like he wanted to win or even be there. Bad decision - he’s not country at all!! Well we’ll see if any major market radio stations play his song when it comes out.
Displaced Southern Gal says:
Ya know, when I blogged in about Bobby’s issues, I’d forgotten that the greatest of them all - Hank, Sr. - had a lot of issues, too, and that tortured soul wrote the greatest - and saddest - song of all time - “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” Still gives me shivers when I play it! I’m NOT a regular listener of country, and got hooked at the prospect of Dee Snider trying to go country -
And what’s with that pointing crap Julio does? Can’t you try and country him up a little?
Displaced Southern Gal says:
Maybe Julio figured the fix was in and that’s why as Dee stated in the car wash episode, “He don’t do shit!”
Dennis says:
Well from what JR is saying here Julio was going to win from the get go. I really feel for the others they got cheated and used. I have nothing bad to say about Julio but he is not country at all.
Connie says:
John, You for six weeks preached to your contestants about changing going country You would kill for country music, You made a little girl cry because she was to pop.(Frankly coming from you is a joke) The after 6 weeks you go for a Spanish cross over?? I feel like you duped every one with the title of your show Gone Country . I am upset over your choice of Julio ,
He of all the contestants tried the least to do any of the task , I did see that big of reaction from the audience The others got bigger reactions. Just because a few girls screamed does not make him a star
If CMT does this show again I hope they find a judge who IS COUNTRY. And truly understands it.
John your choice was wrong and you flat out lied to us about what you preached for 6 weeks,
You fight for country music my a** what a joke
Mordecai says:
Everybody who keeps complaining about John Rich’s decision to choose Julio obviously doesn’t understand what John was looking for to begin with. Big & Rich’s music is not your “typical” country and I don’t think he was ever looking for a “typical” country singer. Unfortunately, I believe Diana falls into that category. John Rich writes and sings beautiful songs, and he knows what works out there in the market. Any of you that are multi-millionaire singer-songwriters can ridicule John’s decision; otherwise respect the man’s opinion.. he knows what he’s talking about..
Bob says:
Hey folks you need to realize something. JR didn’t get that big log cabin in the woods and the fur coats by making stupid business decisions.I am sure he knows exactly what he is doing…now go back into your trailer and crack open a cold one and chiiiiiiilllll. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.
I was really supprised at how good they all were. I would buy the CD is one is published.
Displaced Southern Gal says:
That big log cabin isn’t his…and I don’t live in a trailer..and there’s nothing wrong with living in one anyway…John has made brilliant decisions but I think his fans feel (rightfully so) cheated as per the show’s premise which he stated in the first episode.
Displaced Southern Gal says:
Gosh, I guess I should write everything down on a notepad and type it in all at once! Sorry, folks!
Hey, “Gone Country” producers! Notice how many people are engaged in this thing? Ka ching!
matgirl says:
I to was so disapointed the show was about country and how it come from you soul or so i thought. Bobby brown laid his out on the line as did Maureen. I loved the show till the final and was crushed what a joke.
Max says:
I watched the video of the performances and there have been people who have posted on the blog and message board who were at the Wildhorse. Julio got some screams from the girls but, sorry John, the audience overall wasn’t anymore into him than anybody else. Diana DeGarmo got a standing ovation from those in the balcony and she won the audience over. Initially she went in as the least known of the bunch and came away a big fan favorite that night.
So to prove you were right about Julio I’ll bet you plan to torpedo Diana’s chances for Nashville success just so you don’t have egg on your face don’t you?
Bob says:
Hey southern girl, sorry about the trailer comment. I am sure you live in a reel purdy house.
Jimmy Mack says:
John Rich - you are a phony.
You told the 7 non-country music performers that country music was your life and they had better get it together and go country.
Then you picked Julio as the winner? He was horrible. He never got into the swing of the contest - the dinner, hospital, car wash etc he was a fraud - couldn’t wait to get it over with. His song was less than half baked pop.
You picked him so you could get country going in spanish speaking markets - you just sold country music out for a few more bucks in your pocket - kiss my ass, you phony.
DonziDoll says:
JR said, “Julio is such a class act and always carries himself with integrity.”
Yes, he is/does. We’re hopeful that as he gets more exposure that others will also see this! Thank you, JR, for recognizing these fine qualities in Julio Jose! Our family is so excited for him and this opportunity you’re creating. =)
JR said, “There was a palpable magnetism between Julio and that audience, and not just the women — men and women.”
Yes, there sure is…I have seen/felt it firsthand, as has my husband and our teenage son. Julio easily and genuinely connects with people, no matter if it’s a big concert-sized audience or a casual social one-on-one non-performance setting. He’s friendly, polite, and a pure pleasure to be around. He is fun-loving and down-to-earth, not at all lazy/spoilt or a “latin loverboy”…
JR said, “…the X-factor being that thing that you can’t put your finger on, but you witnessed it, you felt it, and it was real. And gotta tell you, Julio had that.”
{nodding head in full agreement} IMHO, that X-factor is evident with Jj even when he’s not performing. Maybe because we have met him and spent time with him, our family could *see* it during each episode. Perhaps others watching made incorrect assumptions without knowing a little background. For example, having talked with Jj about the constant travel between Madrid and Miami, we know personally how he has experienced bouts of jet lag, so when he was napping on the couch, we *knew* the likely reason and that he wasn’t simply being lazy. We have also seen him firsthand, roll up his sleeves to do work that he could’ve left to an assistant or business mgr!
JR said, “Julio Iglesias Jr. brings an element to country music that does not exist — and that being the Spanish-English element.”
There is even more than the S-E element! Jj was born in Madrid so he is Spanish by birth / nationality; Dad is Spanish & Mom is Filipina–so Jj’s half-Spanish half-Asian. He came to the USA as a small child, was raised/educated in the US thru college in California, majoring in Communications. While Spanish is his first language, he speaks excellent English, including slang…He *may* even speak some Tagalog or other languages, I don’t recall, but his fiancee is a lovely Belgian girl… Of all the GC contestants, Julio Jose brings more to the CM table in being able to reach across and connect with many races, creeds, cultures, genders, and ages. IMHO
BTW, JR, our family is WASP, our ancestors came to colonial America (Jamestown) in 1615, and the only Spanish speaker-kind-of is our teenager who took 2 semesters in HS. We’ll be buying anything Julio Jose does in triplicate. Or more!
Nora says:
DonziDoll
Are you related to John?
Kim says:
Your choice of Julio wouldn’t be so irritating if it didn’t contradict everything you said the show was supposed to be about. Basically, he wrote a so so song, had sub par breathy vocals, and catered to the screaming little girls in the front row. Meanwhile Diana out wrote, out performed and out sang him while also winning over a crowd that was initially lukewarm to her. So she wins on 3 of 4 scorecards and you still hand the win off to Julio. Maybe you should have told Diana that making people scream would be a deciding factor. She could have come out in a really skimpy outfit and bent down to sing for all the guys in the front row. I’m sure the hoots and hollers would have impressed you right?
Your explanation doesn’t wash. You had Julio picked to win from the beginning.
Displaced Southern Gal says:
Oh, poor Bob, there’s no need to get so personal and insulting, but I will confide that my house is “purdy” as your terribly insulting and demeaning comment woefully attempts to suggest some sort of lack of intelligence or education, or whatever your issue is with southern folks…
after 28 years of marriage, saving and struggle, we did manage to buy that “purdy” house - our very first - I am in California - where it’s difficult even in the best of times to buy a decent home. If you knew the whole story you would feel ashamed - but maybe not…sorry you feel the way you do..
Bob says:
Hey I just realized something. Julio was not wearing the traditional “country rinestone jacket” they were all forced to don. And he still won! If I didn’t know better I would think the contest was rigged. I demand a recount.
I still like Maureen the best. Nobody gives her the credit she deserves. She has had to overcome being Marcia Brady. It has been on TV EVERY DAY for nearly 40 years. Could you imagine having to live with that. The only thing worse than that would be if you were Jethro.
Heather (Lucky7065) says:
Rock on John!!
Natasha says:
I am from Mississippi and love country music. I love Big and Rich soo much. But I am very disappointed on who won. It in no way sounded like a country song. It was boring and no way would I but his “country music”! I think the wrong person won!
Missy says:
I think Julio was an awful choice to win, and I really hope I never hear that song on country radio. I am 99.9% sure that country radio is not going to accept him as a country music artist. I mean he sang some of the song in Spanish, Hello, this is America, we speak English.
DIANA WAS ROBBED says:
Julio seems like a decent guy with some talent but it’s insulting that the whole thing basically came down to ethnicity and not who really was the best overall contestant and performer.
Diana was robbed. Bobby and Carnie too.
Shelly Crouse says:
I think that Mr. Rich made a gross mistake picking Julio. Based on your criteria for the show he should have been the last person you picked. While Julio is a “pretty boy” and the girls down front were swooning….his weak vocal performance and poor song writing ability should have weighed in a little heavier in your decision making process. Sisco, Maureen and Diana were vocally better and had stronger writing skills. Their sound was country.
Jackie says: says:

I agree with Nora & all of the others who feel cheated. I am just as disappointed in you as everyone else. I watched the whole show from beginning to end & was shocked when you pick Julio. I do not think he should have won.He is not Country. I will not buy his song or CD if one comes out. I hated how you what off on Diana. She should have been the one who won. I agree with others, I hope somebody signs her and soon. I will be looking for her CD in country I hope. Very disappointed in you and the show.
Catherine says:
Thanks
Although, I don’t believe you need to explain your reasons.
We all make choices in life, some people will agree with them and some people won’t. My choice is not to belittle, critize, or judge. I only want to move forward, and see what happens next.
KDG says:
John Rich…
I completely agree with almost everything said in this blog. You did completely contradict everything you said about what country music stands for…He did not sing a country song…He sang a very latin pop song…nothing more and nothing less…He put in zero effort in the entire competition…Everyone else took it seriously and did everything they could to win….They wanted to succeed. I didn’t see any drive from Julio to win ….You went off on Diana who was trying …Julio all he did was whine about how he couldn’t sing a song like that it isn’t him it’s not what he stands for. You clearly wanted a latino artist you said that from episode one..I feel for the other contestants who saw this as an opportunity to restart their careers…They never had a chance…Your mind was set on day one. I find it unfortunate that you wasted their time. Hopefully, someone else will see the talent that the others have and sign them. I wish Julio luck …I feel even he was treated unfairly. You have put him in this position which is unfortunate. You gave him hope that he would be a success in the country industry which is far from the truth. I really enjoyed the show up until the finale.
blueman says:
So, as you stated on the first show JR, Julio is just what country music is looking for.Why didn’t you have a show titled “trying to win the Hispanic music buying audiance”? We, who watched every week feel cheated and you should be ashamed.
Steve says:
Hey John, I understand your reasoning behind this. I just want you to produce Bobby’s song. That song is a hit. I think Bobby should have won the competition but you are the judge of that and that is fair enough. But please call Bobby up and release that song!!!!!!!! It will be a hit!!!!!!
Hope Dye says:
I was VERY shocked at JR’s choice. I like Julio, but, country-NO WAY! I have to say, JR blew it BIG TIME. There were many obvious choices. And people wonder why country music had its ups and downs-this is why! IF there is a 2nd season of Gone Country, I think I will skip it. Whats the point-we Went Latino. And on the first episode, John said to Julio, that He was what country music needed! Sounds to me like, the decision was made then!
DonziDoll says:
{all said in friendly tone of voice} No, Nora, not related to John that I know of, but genealogy is a hobby and if JR has had his family tree researched, I’d love to take a peek to see if we are. Not employed nor connected to him or CMT or the music industry in any way other than “end user/listener”… Never watched CMT before, occasionally listened to CM, had distantly heard of “Save A Horse Ride a Cowboy” but didn’t know anything about Big & Rich until GC. Met Jj a little over a year ago in a completely unplanned & non-music-career situation & began following his activities, both here in the US and abroad, based on the good personal impressions he made. =)
tidy164 says:
What a load of crap!! I’m glad I wore my hipboots before reading it. JR, your not fooling anyone with this transparent hogwash except the lemmings that think you fart sunshine.
It goes against your grain but you should have parted with some of that money you live to grub and hired a PR person. Doing it yourself was laughably transparent, only a true sucker would believe. Your a fraud through and through
Rac in Louisiana says:
Picking Julio was your right it was your show but he didn’t not fit any of the thing you said on the show made a country singer why did you make us sit through that every week when that was not what you used in making your decision?
DENISE says:
HEY JOHN:
I was surprised at your pick but understand that you know best. I truly enjoyed the show. It was lovely to see all the members interact and really show compassion for one another. They all took something from this experience and I feel they will remain friends. Your home is beautiful and I know they all felt at home. Julio, good luck with your venture.
Dennis says:
From JR. “Diana DeGarmo’s vocals were so incredible. Had it just been based on vocal performance, Diana would have won it hands down” Well then when you have your IPOD, or CD playing you don’t see them anyways all you hear is the VOCAL’S Yike’s Not a B & R fan anyways but give me a break you can smell FIX all over this, going to be fun to see how JR gets himself out of this one. Hmmmmmm maybe he sold his horse and does ride a Cowboy? never know!!!!
Tayla says:
John, that blog was absolutley awsome. I’m so happy you explained to us why you picked Julio. Just to also let you know, I agree with you 110%. I trust you and i’m behind you all the way. Prove people wrong John.
JeanieGram5 says:
As far as I’m concerned, the guys all sang their songs in their own original styles…only with cowboy clothes on. ALL EXCEPT JULIO. He didn’t even bother to put on the cowboy clothes. He didn’t bother to do ANYTHING. He said he would feel like an IDIOT singing the two-step style song that was first written. Two step never hurt George Strait. I think the girls all were closer to country than any of the guys. It’s over, but I feel like I’ve been scammed…BIG TIME!
Sherry says:
Where to begin? The number one comment among these responses is an overwhelming feeling of being cheated. And I agree 100%
Numerous times, the viewer was informed that this was a show about “going country”. John Rich at one point ripped Diana stating that “he would DIE for country music.” He ripped her on bringing forth a pop sound. In the end, he rewarded Julio for bringing forth a latin feeling. What? How could we not feel cheated?
Now I don’t have anything against Julio whatsoever…but didn’t he try and shirk his responsibility at every challenge? Wasn’t the camera on him, sleeping, while everyone else was preparing a country meal? And didn’t he try to avoid harnessing or horse (or other task)? Wasn’t he schmoozing with the girls while others were working (washing) at the car wash for donations to the children’s hospital? I can’t recall how many times the other contestants referred to him as being lazy- It just seems, overall, that he was resisting “going country” , big time. Are we to believe that he understands what it’s like to be country–work a farm, cook a meal, identify with the country folk and their emotions? With a performance steeped in sex appeal and lyrics such as:
I want you, you know I do
I need you to want me too
There’s nothing I wouldn’t do
To make you feel the way I feel for you
Cuz I want you to want me
The way I want you
Come on now. And Dee was ripped by John for having “too simplistic lyrics”?
Maddening- There is nothing country about Julio’s song.
John Rich describes his main reason for picking Julio as the “X-factor”. Yes, the crowd moved forward three feet during Julio’s performance. And I believe that it was because he was using his sex appeal, getting down in the crowd. I simply don’t think that’s what country is all about. It’s cheap. I like to think of country music as a solid, wholesome industry. If this competition would have been “Who can turn on the audiences the most in hopes of making quick buck” then Julio’s your man.
Either CMT did a lousy job of marketing/editing this program, or John did a less-than-stellar job of choosing the winner. Either way, I too feel cheated. I watched this show with anticipation of seeing who could embody the essence of country. I was cheated. It leaves me with a bad taste, wondering what this show was masquerading as.
Was it nothing more than a promo for Big and Rich?
I won’t be watching again.
Kimster says:
WOW!! My mouth is still hitting the floor. Julio was the absolute last person that I thought would be picked, and Yes Big and Rich aren’t your typical country group but Julio come on! There was nothing country about him. It was almost like he felt he didn’t have to try!?!?!? Was this decision pre-determined? Seems like it!! Everyone else on the show gave there all both when there was a challenge and in writing their own song. John Rich, I’m shocked and disappointed!!!!
Rich (not John) says:
JR,
I hope you were wearing scooba gear with the tank when you made up your last blog, cause that bull poop is sooooo deep that you need several hours of oxygen to survive getting out.
There were 6 people you could have justified as a winner. You selected the only one that was absolutely unacceptable by your standards. Own up or get out country forever.
Libby says:
What a bunch of BS! Everyone knows that anyone else but Julio should have won, because everyone had amazing songs expect for Julio. I would love to know the REAL REASON he won, but I’m sure we the true country fans will never hear that.
My favorite was Bobby….and he deserved to win!
David says:
JR, regarding your choice of Julio as the “Gone Country” winner, I’d like to quote two of your contemporaries” “There’s been a Murder on Music Row.”
Michelle Jones says:
I love the final show and I have to say I saw John’s face when Julio performed his song and I thought yep there is the winner and the audience deffinetly responded to julio more than they did to any one else,so every one that’s bashing on John becuase of his desision needs to back off. As far as Bobby and Dianna go we have not heard the last from them I think they both will have some sort of deal going in Nashville before the year is up if they don’t already. As far as Julio fitting in to country music yall get a GRIP cause they said the same thing about Big and Rich too and HELLO look at where they are now. Ok I’m done venting for now. Michelle Jones
allishay says:
I never thought Julio did well. I hated the way he was on the show! It seemed that he couldn’t connect to the rest of the cast. I find it very hard to believe that he couldn’t tone down the accent purely because I have a friend who is brazilian and her english is flawless. She even has a southern draw. She still lives in Brazil and only visits the US once every 7-8 years. Only living in the US and studying english for a year! He could have done better. I will NOT buy his album. The other contestants were much better and I think Diana should have won. I pray someone in country music snatches her up and gives her a chance. I would buy her music!
Linda says:
Carnie, Mo and Bobby… one of you should be sporting the ring, and the record deal!
Midwesttrucker says:
I understand that the idea was to create a single that would make money. Having said that, the speech about how JR would *die for country* rings very false when you consider his choice. The single will likely make money, but the potential for enhancing Country Music, as well as, his pocketbook was lost by not choosing another artist. The true moneymakers in Country seem to be those who have long term fanbases. Once they love you, and believe in you, they will always come back for more. It almost makes me believe that he had the intention of trying to sell Julio to Country fans before he ever pitched the show to CMT. Would make sense when you consider the uphill battle he would have faced trying to explain why he was producing the song for reasons other than the immediate built in *hook* created by taking Julio Iglesias’ son and putting him out for young girls to have a poster for their wall. The single will be all that is heard from this talented young man and the potential to add someone to Country that would generate long term enjoyment has been lost. Seems a shame.
Rick says:
JR, Do you even listen to Country Music? Hank Williams, Hank Williams JR, David Allen Coe, Merle Haggart, Waylon and Willie? The only reason anyone ever heard of Julio is because his Dad had a hit with Willie Nelson. My Grandmother could have had a hit with Willie Nelson, and she has been dead for years. What was Julio’s big follow up country hit? all the Jalapaneos, I knew before?…good luck, get a hearing aid
Rich (not John) says:
a fix is in:
the previous blog was deleted because of all negative responses. Julio had only 4% support on JR’s own web site and that was echo’d on JR’s blog here.
….now there seems to be a hugely higher percentage of responses supporting Julio.
My question: how many of these posts very quickly after JR’s new blog are plants?? Will this post be deleted? I have all this saved on my hard drive and will be happy to re-post if deleted.
NY’s govenor got exposed today for hookers. That’s a crime. What are you doing JR???? Silly
Jeannie says:
There were no losers on this show. They all sang their stories in their own unique ways and I personally enjoyed each and every one of them. What a fabulous show this was!!!
Jean says:
I went to the finale and John had a hell-uv-a job in front of him. Every performer was unbelievably good. Julio sounded great, his lyrics stick with you and since I took 10 photos of him I must’ve thought he was adorable. Then as each artist performed I’d change my mind cause they were all so daggum good and then Dee was the last, at which point I thought he should win. So Julio’s not as country as we would like, well, George Strait is not as country as Jimmy Rogers was either. Give Julio a break, add a little steel,,,,,Oh My Lord, would he sound great singing Texas Swing style. Let’s grow up people, some of these remarks are so uncalled for and some simply scream ‘ignorance’. None of us has the musical depth of John Rich so let’s just face it, he knows what he’s doing.
Bri from LI says:
The audience moved 3 feet closer is the reason for the X-Factor and why Julio was picked? They moved 3 feet closer because he leaned over and touched the audience. That’s a gimic, a tried and true one and it worked. The audience also new it was being filmed, artist leans into the audience “everybody move up and try to get into the shot and say Hi Mom” If that was a strong basis for your selection I’m seriously disappointed. From a business decision great move. I just feel like I wasted my time when you said in the first 10 minutes of episode 1 that you were looking for a latino artist to cross over into country. That is a fine objective but I would think there are far more deserving candidates bouncing around the club scene in Tejas alone. Hell, what about Los Lonely Boys. Why not a stronger push for them in Nashville since they’re a heck of alot closer to country then Julio. Maybe you can enlist Leonard Nimoy’s help and go In Search Of for GC#2. Well, you’re a great business man and one of the finest writers out there so keep making great music but boy do I feel hoodwinked. At least from NSAI I can hear the truth out of Nashville. Next time instead of wasting my time on Gone Country 2 I’ll just keep writing. Even if I suck at least it would be a more productive use of my time. Finally, Jeffrey Steele’s the man. Great work with B. Brown. There song was the best. Chug a lug a luggin 5 miles an hour… Good luck, Peace. I’ve said mine.
Renee Rhoades-Lembcke says:
Forgive the repeat of what I said in previous blog comments but it still apllies. I will update it though, in view of this blog:
I was EXTREMELY upset and disappointed with the winner chosen. The loud rumbling sounds we all heard when Julio’s name was called was the collective churning of Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams, Tammy Wynette, and a host of others spinning in their crypts. I am not so upset because Julio is Latino, bubblegummy pop, androgynist cute, etc. The boy has no real vocal TALENT. The instrument is inferior. People using the argument Julio isn’t country enough? Some people said the same things about Jim Reeves and Patsy Cline. But they had the voices that made country music believe, and they sang from the heart. Julio’s lyrics were shallow and trite. The closest equivalent I could make would be when Pat Boone tried to sing heavy metal. I could picture people like Elton John, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Eminem, Prince, Britney Spears or Fergie being more COUNTRY than Julio Jr. JR, let me apply the “ACID TEST” from David Allan Coe’s hit, The Ride, like a checklist.
Mr. Iglasias, can you make folks cry when you play and sing (like Maureen did)? (No) Have you paid your dues (like Bobby Brown has)? (No) Can you moan the blues (like Bobby again)? (Nope) Can you bend them guitar strings (like Dee?) (Nu-uh), Can you make folks feel what you feel inside (like Carney, Sisco and Diana)? (No, but I CAN make teen girls giggle, blush and sigh).
Ding ding ding, this is not your winner then.
JR, people swooned over David Cassidy, Bobby Sherman, the Monkees, and the Beatles. Teens faint, cry and piddle themselves when they see Michael Jackson in concert. This makes NONE of them country. (Well, Ringo did have a quite decent remake of Buck Owens’ Act Naturally, but that’s about it.)
Oh, well, someone has to make fodder for the Wal-Mart bargain bins, I guess. Bring him on! LOL
Renee Rhoades-Lembcke says:
PS And the moisture you felt when you announced Julio as the winner was from the soft fall of tears from country greats who paved the way for future generations: Among them I include Hank Williams, Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Waylon Jennings, Grandpa Jones, Mother Maybelle Carter, Johnny Cash and June Carter, Roy Acuff (he would bodyblock this kid from going on HIS Grand Ole Opry stage, I think), Minnie Pearl, Tex Ritter, Johnny Horton, Roy Rogers, Lefty Frizell, Dave Dudley, Hank Thompson, Hank Snow, Tammy Wynette, Ernest Tubb, Faron Young, Marty Robbins… I could go on for miles here, but you get the picture.
Amy says:
Simply put.JR got it wrong.
Enjoyed the show, right up until John announced that Julio was the winner.
Come on.That wasn’t country AT ALL.
Julio will make the registers r$ng ,but he’s not the one who’s “Gone Country”
Don’t get me wrong.I have nothing against Julio. He’s nice looking, but that’s not what it was about.
Renee Rhoades-Lembcke says:
PSS And while I applaud your wanting to include in the audience of country music an artist who would draw in an underserved group of potential fans… What the &^%$#@! about blacks? Can you name one African American artist getting play-time on country radio? Julio may have wowed the live audience that night, but if you are honest, Bobby Brown was included in the group partly because he would be a ratings draw… and he was. And BB had further to come than young Julio, whose daddy probably still has Willie Nelson on his speed dial.
In fact, sir, I WOULD’VE UNDERSTOOD PICKING ANY OF THE WHOLE GROUP E X C E P T Julio. Yep, still scratching my head…
Shandra says:
I used to listen to everything but country music when I was younger but eventually the message and meaning behind the songs had me abandoning everything else. After your comment about Johnny Rodriguez I immediately downloaded some songs so I could maybe try to understand your selection. After listening I still don’t understand. Johnny is everything thing country was and (hopefully) will remain.
Julio had a poor attitude through out the show. The way he addressed the song writers was terribly disrespectful and I am sure he isn’t losing any sleep over the ordeal.
Ya know I really thought country music was the one place where the song and message was more important then all the cheap frills and ridiculousness that the rest of the music industry has. Thank you for opening my eyes.
Rick says:
I got an Idea!, get this boy a mullet and teach him Acky Breaky Heart
Lorraine says:
Before I read JR’s final blog, I wrote to disagree with his decision of Julio as the winner. Now I have read his explanation, and still compltely disagree with his choice. I have nothing against a Latino country singer, but Julio did not sound country at all. I am still so upset that John could rip into Diana as hard as he did for sounding pop, and then go on to pick Julio. John, you are a hypocrite! All that dumb retoric about killing and dying for country music, What a bunch of crap!!!!!!!!Julio’s song was the absolute worst!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not even close to any country song I have ever heard. I guess Julio’s final performance impressed the ladies, but again the real test of a great song is if you want to listen to it over and over while you are traveling alone in your car. You can’t see the singer or reach out and touch his hand, you can only hear the music, and I would not listen to Julio’s song more than half way before I changed the radio station.
I loved this show until the very end. I am hoping someone will have the sense to release Diana, Carnie, and Bobby’s songs. I am also hoping for a second season that is truly dedicated to finding some real country talent.
Jeff says:
Did you just say one of the reasons you picked Julio was because he had palpable magnetism with the audiance, your kidding right??/ Yes Julio did have some girls that were up front squeeling at him as he had come over and was singing to them down on his knees ( anyone would scream or blush if they were being sung to).. Im Not buying this palpable magnetism bullshit at all because DEE Snider had the whole crowd Rockin, and Diana DeGArmo was the only person who had the people in the Balcony coming up to the rails with a Standing O and Hootin and Yelling. Bobby also got a pretty good reception but Bobby forgot some of his lyrics and adlibed a few.. you cant Give me the JULio had the X factor( That night) and expect me to by it as I was there I know Better.. Diana DeGarmo was the clear winner that night,
NO Disrespect to Julio or his fans,He won, Its over, and Congratulations to him. But im going to call Bull on JR for letting the others think they had a chance, when IMHO I feel he had already chose Julio from the get go.
Trish says:
I have nothing against Julio but shouldn’t part of the requirement for winning have been writing an actual country song? He performed his song like a pop song. It was more pop than Diana’s yet you let him get away with it.
Diana is the only one in the cast with major potential as a country artist. She doesn’t need this show in order to make it yet it is also a slap in her face to be so rude and demanding of her and then when she rises to the challenge you pick somebody else anyway.
Juanita says:
Although I feel that Julio was good, I also feel he was pop/latin all the way. His style wasn’t very country in my opinion. I felt that you should have chosen Maureen, Diana, or Bobby (and I’m not that big of a Bobby Brown fan). I felt that one of those had the better “Gone Country” feeling than the others. Sisqo was hip-hop dancing too much. Dee Snider was too hard core rock and roll (with the flipping of the finger) for a country song.
Juanita says:
I didn’t get to see Carnie perform. I gotta watch it again.
Serenah says:
John you sorry excuse for a man! Your an idiot for not picking Diana! You going off on Diana made her work harder and yet she didn’t win. Well that’s ok cuz one day when she goes platinum she’s going to make you look a fool. Fool!
Rick says:
My question is how a Rich, Pampered, Spoiled latino, (no disrespect) can even come close to relating to the hard working men and women from the South???????, JR Country is a way of Life, I don’t care how much money you throw at it,,,,get a Clue.

Country Girl Leanne says:
JR - I completely loved Gone Country and my husband and I were hooked from the first episode. So entertaining and each person was so endearing. We loved getting to know the characters and you. We were impressed with you up until your decision. Although we respect your decision as your decision, we have to say, COME ON JR DO YOU SERIOUSLY BELIEVE JULIO HAS THE BEST CHANCE OF GOING COUNTRY when his song was absolutely not country at all!?!? It sounded like Latin pop to the core. It was obvious he had no expectation of winning nor did he appear to have a heart burning desire to win. He was the most lackluster of the group in every way. In our opinion, Maureen McCormick should have won this hands down. Her song was the most country and the audience really responded to her. Not to mention it would have meant the world to her to win. Julio surely may draw the women to his concerts, but why does that matter so much? Don’t get me wrong, Julio seems like a good guy, but we don’t see how he will possibly appreciate and represent country music as it deserves. Maureen may have her insecurities, but she could have really brought something special and GENUINE to country music and touched many lives. If thousands of Spanish-speaking fans are attending Big and Rich concerts and I’m sure other country music concerts already, what are you so worried about? You’re achieving your goal yourself and should have chosen a more countryfied person to represent Country Music and let the Spanish speaking fans continue to steadily increase on their own, and they will. Instead you chose the least country of them all. I guess it was foreshadowing when you told Julio the first episode “we have been searching high and low for someone to bridge the gap between country music and the Spanish-speaking world…” Did any of the other contestants even stand a chance against your agenda? Well enough of that. We love ya anyway and in spite of your decision we’re looking forward to season 2!
Rich (not John) says:
7th overall,
JR only bothers to mention Diana is his latest BS blog as any cometition to “the winner” Its pretty clear that Julio was 7th on every credible score sheet by JR’s stated criteria when combined on the JR scale. Let’s hear JR’s explination for Julio over the other 5… Heck at least blame CMT or the producers for forcing you to say Julio is the winner??? What would Gretchen say to that???
Do tell JR. I’ve got my waders on. Or just delete blog like the last one. This is all very entertaining. Oh nevermind. I’m just going away cause I no longer care for this. The other 6 I’ll follow.
Vicki says:
John you made the smart choice. You have a ear/eye for business. I think the reason there is so much heat here, is the show never really brought out Julio. The main personalities were Dee, Bobby, Maureen, Diane, Carnie…Sisqo and Julio were the quiet ones. So for them I can see how it was a shock. This is a post I wrote:
John Rich is no dummy
Think about it. Bobby is too well known all over..it would be very hard, regardless of the country song (and it was indeed a fine one), to have country viewers not to question his integrity. His drinking is also of a concern as well as…well..his sleepwalking.
Maureen would have been a very close 2nd to Julio. Her song was so emotional and she doesn’t have a bad voice for country. But weighing up Maureen and Julio with the girls screaming..well, John saw that he could possibly gleam some more of the Hispanic community over to country, plus Julio is young, georgeous with a very sexy, breathy voice. It was a no-brainer which one would have a better chance of possibly making it.
Trish says:
You’ve often said it’s country music fans that you have to please and that they have the final say. I think the final scorecard will reflect Diana degarmo as the winner in all of this. I wish Julio well but GC found it’s star in the making and her name is Diana Degarmo. Too bad John Rich couldn’t see it for himself.
StephyB says:
“Gone Country” Affirmative Action?
What a joke!!!
My husband and I watched Gone Country faithfully and were so shocked by the outcome. Is this country music affirmative action? Doesn’t it matter if Julio is not honest or sincere and doesn’t seem to care about anyone but himself? Isn’t that what country music is all about? Being honest, sincere, empathetic and compassionate? Julio is a spoiled brat and didn’t do a damn thing during the whole competition. So what if the girls screamed at him? Did you hear his song? The band carried him, not his singing. If I heard his song on the radio, I wouldn’t buy it.
I would, however, buy a song by Mo, Bobby, Carnie, or Diana. Their songs were good country songs.
I would absolutely relish the chance to have my songs produced by John Rich, but I am questioning my sanity at this point for even thinking that.
Why not give real people this chance? Real “country” people would appreciate every opportunity given them. No drunken episodes, no disrespecting fans with the bird, or the f-bomb.
Lora says:
Hey, I must say I too was disappionted in the winner. I liked Carnie and even Mo’s songs better. I had forgotten what a VOICE Bobby Brown had. I loved Bobby’s song I mean country has always been about the transforming of your life. I know Bobby would have been to big a liablity with his drinking. I would love to get a CD of the all songs. Did Los Lonley Boys count as country?
Lorraine says:
I see some people calling JR’s pick of Julio “a good business decision.” JR better market this to a Latin/pop audience. Otherwise, it is the worst business decicion he ever made. I can only see a very few people on this blog who agree with Julio as the winner, so who the hell will be buying this song. Again, I have nothing against Latin artists, but Julio’s song is NOT COUNTRY!!!! Please do not insult the intelligence of the country fans (you remember us, the ones you would die for), by marketing this as a country song. I URGE COUNTRY RADIO TO REFUSE TO PLAY THIS SONG!!!!!!

Have been listening to Country Music for OVER 50 YEARS - but I also listen to what my son likes, it’s good to be able to relate. Music is a language of it’s own and can touch people on so many levels, whether it’s Rock & Roll, Jazz, Blues, or Country.
Good Choice picking Julio the country world could use some diversity - would like to see him duo with a female country artist & see what happens.
So many blogs about how the song wasn’t country - listen to some of the Dixie Chicks songs, as well as Faith Hill. Some of these blogs are so narrow minded, what a shame.
People are dying in Iraq & you get stirred up about a song, put it in perspective for crying out loud.
Pat Shields says:
Number 1 I think Gone Country was a great success. I loved that show and hope each and everyone of them record country songs. I was really surprised with Bobby Brown all the press you seen and heard I think they were tripping he was great! I loved Carney Wilson too and Diana really turned around and nailed it. Mo I was worried about her, Dee and Sisco but again wow they pulled it off. I would of picked Bobby Brown but I have to say Julio was HOT!!! I can see how hard it was for you. The presentation of the show was great. John Rich you are awesome!! Keep up the good work and way to go! Can’t wait till the next season
which you should just make it and whole year show!!!

good idea. Let’s send Julio to Iraq.
Rick says:
Well I don’t know, but sounds to me like another Murder on Music Row!
The end of John says:
John, oh John. I don’t think a Blog posted by you is going to help you out of this one. I don’t have to repeat all the posts on here that are revealing your intentions on picking Julio over Diana. I was there at the Wildhorse the night of the finale and was on the floor right in front of you so I saw and heard everything live the same as you did. Julio didn’t move “us” any more than Diana did! In fact Diana’s performance blew me and the rest of the audience away. I heard and saw a hit performed by Diana, but you, the country star couldn’t? I was there John! She had one of the best songs, had the best performance and no doubt had the best vocals. She had the crowd! Diana was the rightful winner but you say you gave it to Julio because some girls rushed the stage only after he kneels down towards them. You don’t think it had anything to do with them knowing it would get them on the TV camera if they when up to him after he reached out to them? And what does Julio’s good looks have to do with him singing country music?
John posts this: So on the finale, as I’m watching everybody perform, once again it was not extremely clear who was in the lead up until I saw Julio
John, how can you post that and be credible with it when Julio was the second to perform? And I know it was not edited differently because, remember, I was there too. So with that, Julio won before Siqo, Diana, Bobby, Maureen and Dee (that was the order of performances) all had a chance to perform! Personally, I don’t believe it was his performance at all because I think you had him to win before the show started to fill your Hispanic quota. Diana had just as good of a performance as he did. I guess in your perspective, if Diana had worn next to nothing then juggle towards the front so the guys would rushed the stage for a better look that would have put her over the top! Well your pick for Julio won’t work because he is not going to be played on country radio you fool and the reason is because “it’s not country stupid”. My country station played his song today and wanted people to call in to say what they thought about it. The DJ’s said they had never had a debut song played that not one person out of 30 said they liked. The DJ’s said the jury had spoken and the song is a flop and they will not play it again. After that they ridiculed the song and joked about Julio being a Latin lover not country lover. John you screwed up big time on this one! Diana DeGarmo is going to be that country star you thought Julio was going to be and she is going to make you look like the fool you are for not picking her. This will be the end of John.

“My question is how a Rich, Pampered, Spoiled latino, (no disrespect)…”
{replying in no disrespect} Rick, Jj is not latino. Latino refers to people of the central/south americas. They are primarily of spanish-speaking dialects and cultures; yet different than those of Spain where Julio was born.
My impression of him from real-life experiences is that he is not someone who is rich & pampered. His house in Miami is a 3 BR 1950s, NOT on Star Island like most other celebrities & even drives an older model Ford truck. Sorry to disappoint any Chevy truck owners, LOL!
Serenah says:
I agree with you Trish. GC has found it’s true country star Diana DeGarmo.
Rick says:
Well DonziDoll, I guess he should have showed up in the first show in a Bass boat instead of one his Daddy bought him. By the way do you know what a 3BR goes for in Miami…more than most country folks can afford.
very surprised says:
I was very disappointed with the results. After going off on Diana about her song not being country at all, Julio wins. In my opinion, his song was way more pop than Diana’s before she fixed it. All in all, I thought the 3 girls had much better songs than the guys. Hopefully, somebody out there was watching the show and records what I think would surely be hits.
Mike says:
My wife and I enjoyed the show up to the end. You pick the least country and worst song as a winner. If there is a second season of Gone Country I hope you can get it right. Once again BIG disappointment.
Displaced Southern Gal says:
Oh, no, John! I have read two blog comments about DJ’s making fun of “I Want You?” Is that what it’s called? I was lost for a word to describe his vocals until someone said “breathy”…that’s it! I’ve been around over five decades and the only two people I’ve heard described as “breathy” are Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy…not a very good start, dude. I don’t watch CMT regularly but was off work today and checked in occasionally..never saw the hot video, but maybe I just missed it by a moment…somebody’s gonna take a bath on this one and I hope it’s not the fans!

IMHO the finale blog was removed due to TOS violations which could place the site in liability jeopardy. What I witnessed was someone made a comment and then some trolls came out from under their bridge and began flooding the board, including probable FCC violations like false impersonation & internet abuse.”

Displaced Southern Gal says:
Oh! When Diane sang her song that night, I noticed that although you had ripped her good the night before (never heard of her B4 now, I don’t care whether you did or didn’t tear her a new one; I’m a musician & have been ripped B4, no big deal, it’s the game), Diane reworked it a bit and when she slid right on in to that big note you went right along with her, raising your arm and cheering along with the audience - and she was redeemed! Had I been that child THAT would have been better than winning that ring!

{lol, agrees that BASS boat might seem more *country*} I am guessing that the Fountain speedboat used for GC was likely loaned from the local dealer, as I didn’t see any owner registration decals on the sides. I thought it was funny to see Jj driving it, like he cruised all the way across the Atlantic from Spain. =) Julio actually own a Donzi, like our family. Ours is an 1985 and his is a little bit newer. And yes, I know what a 3 BR goes for in Miami. Same size/age home in my town goes for around $80K. My point was that in real life Jj doesn’t flaunt a rich, pampered lifestyle. He owns a SMALL home & drives an OLD truck. The camera *might* not have captured Jj’s *country* side, but I have a feeling that JR saw it clear as day. =)

All do respect, I think John Rich made the wrong choice. Personnally I thought Dee Snider was the best one and should of been choosen. He brought a lot of energy and rocked the house, you wanted to keep on partying after he was on. Also I do not see what the big deal was about Sisco doing a dance move, give me a break–there was nothing wrong w/ that.
DonziDoll says:
Speaking of how GC filmed the staged *arrival* of each cast member, seems like Dean the Bus Driver picked up Dee Snyder at a COFFEE shop, Bobby Brown landed at the Nashville airport in a PRIVATE JET, sweet Diana at an ICE CREAM PARLOR… I will have to go back and watch again to recall where Carnie, Mo, and Sisqo were picked up!

ITA–it would’ve been fun to maybe see the back-up singers do the Sisqo move like line dancing with him.
Jim says:
I was pulling for Julio from the start. I was hoping someone would pull him aside and let him listen to Johnny Rodriquez and Freddy Fender classic country and see how they merged the hispanic culture with country back in the day.
Evidently no one did that. The song wasn’t country and he was flat and vocally off through most of the song. I thought it was the second worst performance of the bunch. I think sometimes people see what they are hoping to see.
Rick says:
My point still stands, how can ayoung man who has lived a much better than average life really know whats in the hearts of country fans? He reminds me of a country want to be Donny Osmen or Micheal Jackson, I prefer country Like Alan Jackson, George Jones, George Strait. You cannot represent country music if you never felt hardship or heart ack. could be wrong, but don’t sell cars if you don’t know how to drive.
